"The portals create a level playing field for agents big and small and ensure that all listings are aggregated into one place, which is a good thing," said Jon Byers, founder of London estate agency Anderson Rose. However Byers hasn't fully drunk the portal Kool Aid - yes, they are useful, but no, they are not the end of the story. "In the 'old days', buyers and tenants would walk from one end of the high street to the other, popping into each estate agent to register with them and take away a nice stack of property brochures," he said. "That was good because it gave us the opportunity to understand a buyer's requirements right at the start and then make appropriate recommendations."
