"The removal or temporary reduction of VAT on all standard home improvements has been a prominent campaign for various industry figures since 2021. However, Burnham — like his predecessors — will have his hands tied here, too because VAT accounts for 15 per cent of all government revenue, bringing in £171 billion in receipts in 2024-25, and next year is expected to generate £180.7 billion — about 5.9 per cent of the UK’s GDP. “Andy Burnham’s not going to change that,” says Jon Byers, the founder of Anderson Rose, an estate agency."
